Sydney Obesity Surgery
At Advanced Surgicare, Sydney bariatric surgeon, Dr. V. Kuzinkovas, performs weight loss surgery to help individuals suffering from obesity lose the excess weight. Dr. Kuzinkovas is skilled in a range of bariatric surgery techniques, including gastric bypass, Lap Band gastric banding surgery and sleeve gastrectomy, so he is able to treat a wide range of obesity-related concerns.
What Is Obesity?
Obesity is the term used to describe a body weight greater than what is generally deemed healthy for a person of a given height. The term also describes a range of weight that is linked to an increased chance of developing certain health problems and diseases.
When establishing if an individual is an appropriate bariatric surgery candidate, Dr. Kuzinkovas refers to the person’s body mass index, or BMI. Although BMI does not necessarily reflect a person’s body fat percentage, it is an effective method for categorizing someone’s weight in relation to accepted standards. In general, someone is regarded as obese if they have a BMI of 30 or more.
Obesity-Related Co-Morbid Health Conditions
An individual is considered to be morbidly obese when they have a BMI of 40 or more, however, a person with a BMI lower than 40 can still be considered morbidly obese if he or she suffers from at least one serious obesity-related health condition, known as a “co-morbid” health problem. Obesity-related co-morbid health conditions include heart disease, type-2 diabetes, high blood pressure, asthma, sleep apnea and several others.
Candidacy for Bariatric Surgery
Calculating one’s BMI is one of the initial steps in the journey toward losing weight. By determining BMI, individuals can honestly establish if they suffer from obesity or morbid obesity. Those who suffer from morbid obesity may be appropriate candidates for bariatric surgery, such as gastric bypass, gastric banding surgery with the Lap Band or sleeve gastrectomy surgery. Although BMI is just one of many factors used to establish if someone is a suitable weight loss surgery candidate, it is an integral factor in determining candidacy. In general, appropriate bariatric surgery candidates include those who:
- Have a BMI of at least 40
- Have a BMI of at least 30 to 35 and at least one serious co-morbid health condition
- Are overweight by about 20 kilograms or more
Recognizing that one suffers from morbid obesity can be a difficult realization. However, the only way to truly start on the journey toward weight loss, improved health and a better quality of life is to be honest with oneself about obesity.
