Ways To Stay Physically Active Without Leaving Your House
Just because lockdown rules or other restrictions are in effect doesn’t mean there aren’t effective ways to stay physically active and keep fit during these strange times. Staying physically active also helps improve our mental state. Dr. Vytauras Kuzinkovas of Advanced Surgicare discusses how to keep yourself in good physical shape even if stuck at home.
Walking, Even in Small Areas
Walking is among the best types of low-impact exercise. You can incorporate walking into daily activities around your home. For example, if you are using the phone, walk around your home during the conversation rather than sitting down.
Walk around your garden, and if you have stairs in your house, develop the habit of climbing them frequently to build up various muscle groups. Fifteen minutes of going up and down stairs daily can provide you with a good workout.
WHO Recommendations
The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise weekly, or a combination of the two. It is certainly possible to meet the WHO recommendations even when stuck in the house.
Besides walking and standard exercises, take advantage of daily activities to keep yourself active. Put some music on while cleaning your house and dance while dusting or sweeping. If you have young children, get them involved in physical activities in which you participate. If your garden needs some tender loving care, perform some relatively strenuous outdoor work. In addition to the physical activity, your house is cleaner, your kids are happier, and your garden looks better than ever.
Online Exercise Classes
Although you may not have the ability to attend regular exercise classes, there are plenty of online opportunities available. These free classes are found on YouTube and elsewhere. Just make sure the class you choose is right for you. If you are unfamiliar with the exercises featured, pace yourself and don’t overdo it. Once you find a suitable exercise class, “attend” on a regular schedule.
For sports fans, exercise games are another option. These virtual exercises simulate various sports, including tennis, football or even skateboarding. They can substitute for the real thing until you are able to indulge in your favorite sports again.
Set Goals
When you are basically homebound, setting exercise goals is a bit more difficult. However, it is crucial to set such goals and track your progress. Keeping careful track of your exercise and fitness routine helps keep you motivated.
